6 signs you need a fuse board upgrade

The clues that your fuse box, or consumer unit, is due for replacement, and what a modern board actually does to keep your home safe.

Your fuse board, properly called the consumer unit, is the heart of your home's electrics. It splits the incoming supply into circuits and, just as importantly, protects you and the property if something goes wrong. Boards do not last forever, and an old one can quietly become a weak point. Here are six signs it may be time for an upgrade.

1. Old rewireable fuses or a plastic board

If you still have a board with rewireable fuses, or a white plastic unit with a plastic enclosure, it is likely to be decades old. These predate modern safety standards, and since 2016 consumer units in domestic properties have generally been required to have a non-combustible, usually metal, enclosure. An old plastic board is one of the clearest signs an upgrade is worth considering.

2. No RCD or RCBO protection

An RCD, or residual current device, cuts the power in a fraction of a second if it detects a fault to earth, which is the kind of fault that can cause a fatal electric shock. If your board has no RCD protection at all, whole sections of your home may be relying only on old fuses. Modern boards use RCBOs to give each circuit its own dedicated protection.

3. A cracked, scorched or warm board

Any sign of heat is a warning. Scorch marks, a burning smell, a board that feels warm to the touch, or visible cracks around the fuses all point to loose connections or an overloaded circuit. These are not things to live with, and they are a strong reason to have the board inspected and, in most cases, replaced.

4. Frequent or nuisance tripping

The occasional trip is normal, but if your electrics trip out repeatedly for no obvious reason, it usually means either a genuine fault or a board that can no longer cope. Rather than keep resetting it, it is worth having the cause traced, and a tired old board is often part of the story. Our EICR safety report is a good way to establish the true condition.

5. Adding an EV charger, extension or electric shower

Big additions like an EV charge point, a new extension or an electric shower place extra demand on your system and often need their own protected circuit. An older board may not have the spare capacity or the right protection, so an upgrade is frequently part of the job when you add significant new load.

6. Buying an older home

If you have just bought, or are about to buy, an older property, the consumer unit is one of the first things worth checking. Many older homes also have no surge protection, which leaves sensitive electronics exposed. An upgrade brings the installation up to a modern standard from the day you move in.

What a modern consumer unit gives you

A new board wired to the 18th Edition wiring regulations is a real step up in safety. A modern consumer unit upgrade typically gives you:

  • A non-combustible metal enclosure that contains any fault.
  • RCBO protection on each circuit, so a fault on one does not black out the whole house.
  • Surge protection, or an SPD, to guard sensitive electronics against voltage spikes.
  • Clear labelling and full certification, so you know exactly what protects what.

Put simply, a modern board reacts faster and more precisely to faults, keeps more of your home running when something does go wrong, and gives you peace of mind that your electrics meet today's standards.

Upgrade FAQs

Common questions

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

Most domestic consumer unit upgrades are completed within a day. Larger properties, or jobs that turn up other issues once the old board is off, can take a little longer. We will give you a realistic timescale up front.

Will my power be off during the work?

Yes, the power needs to be off while the old board is removed and the new one is wired and tested. We keep the outage as short and as well planned as possible, and we always let you know before we start.

Do I legally need to upgrade my fuse board?

There is no law forcing you to replace a working board purely because it is old. However, if it is unsafe, or if new work cannot be signed off against the current regulations, an upgrade may be necessary. An inspection will tell you where you stand.

How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost?

As a rough industry guide only, domestic consumer unit upgrades in the UK often fall somewhere in the region of £450 to £900, depending on the board, the number of circuits and any remedial work.
